Balsa (Ochroma Pyramidale) is a fast growing tree that is native to subtropical rainforests of Central and South America with Ecuador exporting more than 90% of the world balsa due to its favourable climate. In most cases balsa trees are ready to be harvested in four to five years and their height can reach up to 30 meters (90 feet) with a diameter of up to 50cms (20 inches). Balsa wood, with a dry density between 65 to 230 Kg/cbm, is the lightest commercial wood available and together with its high strength and stability are some of the properties that have caused it’s rise in popularity. Balsa wood is increasingly utilized to produce composite material used in Wind Turbine Blades, Boats, Trains and Aviation in addition to it’s previous uses in Model Airplanes, Surfboards and Fishing Lures. Kamsource supplies balsa from Ecuador, Brazil and Colombia with plantations in Brazil and recently in Costa Rica. We cut and kiln dry Balsa wood at 70° C for 11 days before planing, quality inspection and packaging. We can also supply glued blocks and panels according to your specifications.
